Why hire a decorator or designer you ask?
Well, let me tell you a story. Recently I was asked to come and re-pick the colour of newly painted home. The homeowners had just spent months rebuilding their family home and it was down to the last decision....painting the exterior. I received a phone call that had a slight sound of panic in the voice "Can you tell me what you think of this colour, I think I messed up". When I arrived on the scene the colour chosen was lilac. This was an honest mistake, one that was taken from a house featured in a magazine. I am sure it was chosen on whim due to so many overwhelming decisions having to be made at once. Well this was a $3500 mistake! Believe me it would have not costed anywhere close to that to have a professional help.
Why not just ask the local Paint Store? Sure, one could do this, but they are not seeing the whole picture such as the neighboring homes or the cultured stone or the roof colour. I am sure you or your neighbor would not be pleased if you finished having your house painted, took a step back and realized it was the same colour. Colour chips do not always look the same on a big scale and these types of mistakes can happen. The homeowners in the story did not take into consideration that their cultured stone has an orange undertone. They never would have been happy with the first colour had they not been able to change it due to the extra expense.
Why did the colour from the magazine not look the same on their house?
This is because the ink on every magazine will show different. It is no different than ordering something over the internet and it is a totally different colour than originally thought. In this case everyone's browser is different.
To answer the first question of why use a decorator or designer, we do not get overwhelmed with juggling multiple decisions. For many of us, colour is very easy to see and there should never be this kind of Oops!
Please don't make the same $3500 mistake, hire a professional.
